| On 6 Sepember 1944, 137 squadron established itself at Melsbroek airfield (codenumber B58) near Brussels. Squadron members recall the warm welcome that they received from the Belgians. On 22 Septmber 1944, 137 moved to the large airfield at Einhoven (B78) in the Netherlands. This was an extensive airfield with some substantial buildings and many squadrons were based there. The fighting was very fierce at this time and 137 lost it's highly respected CO, Gunnar Piltingsrud. Gunnar was shot down by an FW190 whilst trying to protect an inexperienced pilot. He was the only 137 pilot to be shot down by an enemy fighter during the advance across Europe. Most of 137's casualties at this time were caused by the intense enemy flak which took a large toll of Typhoons. At this time 137 was engaged in supporting Operation Market Garden, the costly attempt to capture bridges by use of paratroopers. Enemy troops made an attack on Eindhoven airfield and 137's members found themselves engaged in a night of gun-battles to repel the troops. |
